International Conference On Public Policy, Social Computing And Development (ICOPOSDEV)

  • International Conference On Public Policy, Social Computing And Development

    October 20, 2017 – October 21, 2017

    OVERVIEW

    Public policy significantly influences the achievement of Sustainable development considering the interconnectedness between policies, decisionmaking process and governance. Following Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), a global vision of development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been adopted across nations. SDGs provide a platform and direct national policies. However, the implementation of SDGs has to accommodate diversity among countries and development sectors.Capability to form rational judgements concerning sustainable development requires understanding of constitutional, political and geographical factors which affect the use of natural resources and management of environment.

    Key arenas of public policy, such as environment, public administration reform, tourism, education, gender, economy, health, and local wisdom, and science and technological innovations urge us to think beyond and across sectors of development and field of knowledge in order to discover synergies and innovations in pursuing the achievement of SDGs.   In line with the increasing role and relevance of social computing in generating public value, this conference will explore the impacts of social computing on specific public services and their governance.

    Deeper knowledge of interlinked between research, policy and development is urgently required to balance conflicting interests, set priorities, and steer the transformation process towards Sustainable Development. At this point, the International Conference on Public Policy and Social Development (ICPOSDev) conducted by the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara cordially invites researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise at this conference with the theme of ‘Public Policy for Inclusive and Sustainable Development’.

International Conference Of Sumatera’s Local Wisdom

Local wisdom is part of the people’s culture which cannot be separated from their own language. It is usually inherited orally from generation to generation through stories. It is found in folklores, proverbs, songs, and folk-games. It is a knowledge found by local community through a collection of experiences which are integrated with understanding a certain culture and local environment.  According to Antariksa (2009), local wisdom is part of the people’s cultural tradition in a certain country which is realized as parts of building physical structure (architecture) and urban areas in the geography of a nation’s archipelago. Therefore, it is the problem of identity. As a local knowledge system, it distinguishes one local community from another one. This distinction can be seen from the types of local wisdom which can be traced its relation to:

  1. Food, especially which is related to a local environment and in accordance with the local climate and staple food;
  2. Production system, which is, of course, related to the traditional local production system as an attempt to fulfill the need and the management of manpower;
  3. Housing which is adjusted to the standard climate and raw materials available in that area;
  4. Clothing which is adjusted to the climate ad raw materials available in that area;
  5. People that are adjusted to the local knowledge system as the result of the continuous interaction constructed due to human primary, secondary, and tertiary needs.

  • Local Wisdom For Sustainable Development

    August 24, 2017 – August 25, 2017

    Background

    LLocal wisdom is part of the people’s culture which cannot be separated from their own lives. It is usually inherited orally from generation to generation. It is found in folk cultural traditions.

    1. Food, especially which is related to a local environment and in accordance with the local climate and staple food;
    2. Production system, which is, of course, related to the traditional local production system as an attempt to fulfill the need and the management of manpower;
    3. Housing which is adjusted to the standard climate and raw materials available in that area;
    4. Clothing which is adjusted to the climate and raw materials available in that area;
    5. People that are adjusted to the local knowledge system as the result of the continuous interaction constructed due to human primary, secondary, and tertiary needs.

    There are many local wisdoms which, without our knowledge, have provided positive values, and the local wisdoms are always beneficial throughout the ages. This ascertains that local wisdom has always existed up to the present. It has to be instilled and developed in facing the reality which exists now.We have ‘spiritual assets’ like local wisdom and religious ethics in Indonesia. Nevertheless, in the historical development, it seems that Indonesia is becoming co-opted by various global economic and political interests dominated by developed countries. Without revitalization, local wisdoms which are our real cultural identities will be vanished.

    Outer space flight performed by the United States and Russia began with science fiction. We, in Indonesia, have abundant traditional literature with myths about supernatural powers; for examples, Gatotkaca that can fly. The problem is how to transform these myths about supernatural powers to technological power.

    Therefore, it is very important to hold an international conference to dig up deeply all aspects of local wisdoms from various areas in Indonesia and in other countries. The conference is expected to provide scientific description about the power of local wisdom in order to cope with various problems in each environment and to revitalize the roles of local wisdoms in the ecosystem of human life.

18 & 19 DECEMBER  2017

  • The 2nd Public Health International Conference (PHICo)-FKM USU

    December 18, 2017 – December 19, 2017

    PHICo or Public Health International Conference is an international conference organized by the Faculty of Public Health, University of North Sumatra for the second time after the success of the first conference in 2016. In 2017 this , Phico will give you and all the participants of the conference about the most sophisticated and latest Informations relate to Public Health.2nd Phico will be filled with sessions of interactive presentations, keynote speakers who are experts from various fields, Case Studies and social activities as well as cultural performances during dinner, and there will also be tours to some destinations in Sumatera Utara after the conference. We believe you will gain valuable experience in line with what you would expect along with the 2nd Phico 2017.

    BACKGROUND

    Indonesia with its abundant natural resources also contain serious cases of health and tropical diseases. Potential growth of bacteria, viruses, ricketsia, fungus as the cause of tropical diseases in Indonesia is very large, supported by the climate factors that affect the ecosystems, animal habitats, infectious diseases and even the growth of colonies of bacteria naturally, the high temperature during the dry season support the replication of disease agents inside and outside the organism, followed with the socio-economic circumstances among residents in tropical area whom living around the poverty line and having kinds of deficiency such as iron, iodine, vitamin A, protein and calories. The greenhouse effect also causes the transmission of tropical diseases and vectors to the higher plateau and the latitude regions, such as the Southern United States and the Mediterranean area. Global warming increase the height of orographic cloud formation resulting cloud coverage that facilitates the optimal conditions for the growth of pathogens. Exploration of tropical rainforest, deforestation, rising immigration, international travel and more travel to the tropics has led to an increased incidence of the disease.

    This is the time where the role and work of Public Health is very important and necessary. It takes up prevention, control and maintainance efforts also financing efforts. This is because the rich countries in the tropics have excellent health infrastructure, a well control management of combating the tropical diseases transmission  while in poor countries do not have. The poor countries with unequal health infrastructure, poor hygiene and sanitation, poor nutrition and poor health behaviors tend to increase the spread of these diseases. The unequal situation between rich countries and poor countries is trigger the WHO to develop a health care system with a system of health insurance for every citizen in the world, because every person has the right to gain access to health promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

    Therefore, this conference invites every part, anyone who concern with this condition to be able to participate, share your knowledge and experiences about this topic. We are hoping that all of us want to contribute in tackling this problem.
