The primary focus of modernization on economic growth and industrialization has overlooked human dimensions such as social justice, community participation, and environmental sustainability. Therefore, a paradigm shift in development is needed toward sustainable human development. Participants of the seminar consisted of researchers from  public and private universities, research institutions, practicee both domestic and overseas. This conference covers several topics: Microbiology and biotechnology, Biodiversity and Enviromental biology, Structure and physiology of animal and plant, Biopharmacy and biomedicine, Agricultre and Foresty. The seminar consisted of plenary sessions and parallel presentation sessions. Plenary sessions presenting four international key note speakers and parallel sessions featuring papers from oral presenters.
The International Conference on Natural Resources and Sustainable Development
The issue of Sustainable Development has remained a central issue over the past three decades. The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are action plans that involve all societal actors and define goals and targets, with the aim of stimulating action to achieve these goals by 2030. However, the gap between the world of research and practice in implementing sustainable development is still considerable.
Universities are key institutions for disseminating knowledge, through teaching, and for generating new knowledge, through research. These aspects make universities important players in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Universities have a major role to play by introducing not only the teaching of sustainable development into the curriculum across the spectrum of courses offered, but also the programs themselves are sustainable. Research found that there is a lack of knowledge and awareness of sustainable development among students as well as experts. Not only that, they are not equipped with the knowledge and skills to participate in sustainable processes in the workplace. Thus, the integration of SD in Higher Education (HE) can be achieved through teaching, research, environmental management, and knowledge transmission so as to improve the implementation of hitherto unsolved sustainability practices related to economic vitality, justice, social cohesion, environmental protection, inefficient energy use, lack of water conservation, increased pollution, human rights violations, war, poverty, excessive use of private transportation, consumerism, and sustainable management of natural resources.
Reflecting on this background, therefore the3rd International Seminar on Natural Resources on Sustainable Development this year focuses on the theme "ESTABLISHING A COHESIVE FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: INTEGRATING RESEARCH AND PRACTICE"

International Conference on Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases (ICTROMI)
Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases remain huge global health problems especially in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. Moreover, climate change and million people travelling across the globe lead to higher risk in spreading of infectious diseases. The world indeed faces those challenges, thus, we are urged to improve and update our knowledge and skill, as well as to collaborate with colleagues from other fields.
The 1st International Conference on Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease (ICTROMI) was held on 15th-18th November 2017 hosted by Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara in conjunction with The Indonesian Society of Tropical and Infectious Diseases Consultant (ISTIC) 23rd National Congress. The 4-days-conference ran well and was delivered by well-known international and national speakers. Approximately 500 people participated in this conference and a total of 228 high-quality papers were presented and are ongoing publication process on IOP Conference Series: Earth & Environmental Science, a remarkable Scopus-indexed conference proceeding.
To continue the success and positive values of the 1st ICTROMI, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara will conduct the conference annually. This year, Department of Community Medicine will be the host of the 2nd ICTROMI with the theme “Tropical and Infectious Disease: Prediction, Prevention, Diagnosis and Management of Illnesses.”. Keynote speakers, plenary lectures, workshops, and symposia will be delivered by both well-known international and national speakers in the field of tropical medicine, infectious diseases, family medicine, public health, research, and precision medicine.
