Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of humour as English foreign language teaching material to improve students ‘speaking skill and the effect that the use of humour gives to their teaching. This study employed a quantitative research design. This study was conducted on March 5th to June 2nd 2020. The participants of this research was the students of fourth semester of English Department, Universitas Negeri Surabaya. The information and the data of this study was taken from observation, questionnaire, and documentation. The result showed that the humorous lectures did have a statistically significant effect on the posttest domain knowledge test scores. The rate of gain from pretest to posttest scores rose up significantly after the application of linguistic theory of humor in their teaching and learning process. The use of humor in speaking process not only improve their speaking ability, but also increase their presentation skill and their capability in communication.
