Difference of hospital anxiety and depression scale – depression (hads-d) score between female caregivers of schizophrenic patients according to gender of patients

Abstract


Caring for schizophrenic patients can lead to emotional distress. Gender of schizophrenic patients associated with the level stress of caregiver. It remains unclear about the differences in HADS-D between female caregivers of scizophrenic patients according to gender of patients.Aims : To determine whether HADS-D score are higher in male group compare with female group. Methods: This study is an analytical study with cross-sectional approach to see the comparation in HADS-D score between 27 female caregivers of female schizophrenic patients and 27 female caregivers of male schizophrenic patients in Prof. dr. M. Ildrem Mental Hospital Medan, using instruments HADS.Results: There are no difference between female and male group in caregivers : age, education time, employment status, marital status, family income / month, Relationship with patient, caring time, time spent/weeks, and patients age, education time, employment status, marital status, PANSS score, number of relapse. The comparation between total HADS-D score between caregivers of male schizophrenic patients and caregivers of female schizophrenic patients are not significant with 7,59 ±2,64 v 8,70±3,71 (p=0,211). Conclusions: HADS-D score are not higher in caregivers of male schizophrenic patients compare with caregivers of female schizophrenic patients.
